Serevi Names Digicel Fiji 7 Team For Dubai
November 24th 2008 - SEREVI NAMES STRONG DIGICEL FIJI 7s TEAM FOR DUBAI
Digicel-sponsored team looks for positive start in IRB 7s World Series
Saturday November 22nd - Nadi: Digicel Fiji 7s coach Waisale Serevi has named a formidable side to lead Fiji’s charge at the Dubai 7s, which opens the IRB 7s World Series next week. Captained by Nadroga halfback Emosi Vucago, the side contains three new caps in Navosa centre Iveri Lavo, Suva’s 19-year-old halfback Peni Rokodiva and wing Osea Kolinisau.
“We’ve been training very hard these past few weeks,” Serevi said. “We’ve worked a lot on ball retention and defence, and I’m happy with the final squad. This is a physically strong team that gels well on the field.”
Backing up Vucago is vice captain and Nadroga team-mate Etonia Naba, who is joined in the forwards by Iliesa Ratuva, Rupeni Nasiga, Sailosi Raboniqica and Jerry Burotu.
Other backline players selected are Naitasiri’s Lepani Nabuliwaqa, Nadroga fullback Naisa Narukutabua, and Vereniki Goneva who skippered Nadi to their Digicel Cup victory in September.
Having completed their preparations, the Digicel Fiji 7s team will take part in the opening march for the Digicel Nasinu Carnival today, starting from Nasole at 2pm. Nasinu is Serevi’s home town where he started his rugby days as a child in the 1970s. It is therefore fitting that he has been invited as Chief Guest for the carnival opening.
“The parade follows the same route that I have walked so many thousands of times from my house in Nasole to the rugby grounds at Valelevu,” Serevi said. “This is where I first played rugby, so it will be a bit emotional for me to walk the route with the Digicel Fiji 7s team.”
