Thursday October 30th - Nadi: Fiji’s fastest growing mobile phone operator, Digicel, today announced a three-year partnership with the Fiji Paralympic Association that includes the title sponsorship of the upcoming Digicel Fiji Paralympic Games and underlines Digicel’s overall commitment to developing sports for the disabled community.
Digicel Fiji CEO, John Delves, described the sponsorship as Digicel’s commitment to all parts of the community.
“At Digicel, we are very passionate about supporting events for the disabled,” Mr Delves said. “This is part of our policy across the Digicel Group. It’s about helping disabled persons to participate in such activities and allowing them to experience the joy of sport.”
“Digicel sponsored the Pacific Paralympic Championship in May this year when Fiji hosted teams from Papua New Guinea, Tonga and Samoa; and also assisted the Fiji team to travel to the Beijing Paralympic Games in September.”
Some 17 Special Education Schools and eight Disabled Peoples Organisations will participate in the Digicel Fiji Paralympic Games 2008, which will be held from the 5th to 7th of November at the National Stadium in Suva.
Daniele Vakalagilagi, president of the Fiji Paralympic Association, acknowledged Digicel for the company’s continuous support.
“We feel blessed to have Digicel on board as a long-term partner,” Mr Vakalagilagi said. “I’ve been very impressed by all the work Digicel has done to assist disabled sports in the region, and we look forward to working with them to help lift the profile of disabled sports in Fiji.”
The Digicel Fiji Paralympic Games 2008 begins on Wednesday 5 November with a march through Suva city centre, followed by the Opening Ceremony at the Multi-sports Gymnasium at Laucala Bay. The athletics events will be held Thursday 6 November at the National Stadium, with the team sports taking place on Friday 7 November.
